What is Post & Beam construction?
Using
large, widely spaced members to provide structural support, post & beam
construction offers the possibility of combining function with the unique
beauty of wood. Posts permit wider spacing for the vertical support while
the beams are used for horizontal structural support instead of regular roof
truss. Since the interior walls are not load-bearing, there is much
flexibility in the floor layout and design.
We use large and solid Douglas fir rafters, which span
the ceiling and rest on posts that are incorporated into the sidewall
framing. Collar ties are utilized to fasten and secure the rafters, thus
strengthening the roof to met load requirement and assure sidewall
stability.
As the beams are exposed on the interior, the warmth
and ambiance of wood is fully realized, thus providing a finished product
that is both highly functional and striking in appearance.
What comes with a Post & Beam Package?
The post & beam packages we offer are very inclusive
and likely exceed what is normally provided in other packages, including log
home kits. Designed for ease in set-up, the package is the complete super
structure of a house and includes our unique roofing system and
pre-constructed wall panels, plus pre-hung windows and doors. Also included
is a complete set of detailed blueprints specific to your package.

What type of
wood is used?
We supply a combination of Douglas fir and pine, thus
offering both strength and beauty. These woods blend very well together and
are both easy to work with and offer an anesthetically pleasing appearance.
What is the
roofing system?
The package includes 4” x 8” insulated roof panels
which are offered with either standard R-30 or optional R-38 insulation
value. The panels create a finished wood ceiling and are composed of
cellulose insulation laminated between OSB exterior sheathing and 4” grooved
fir-tex interior sheathing.
How
long does it take to erect the house shell package?
Designed to be easily built, the package can be up and
ready to be shingled in 3-5 days.
How quickly can a package be delivered?
Depending on the time of the year, the package can be
delivered to your site in 3 to 6 weeks of ordering.
What needs to be done at the building site prior to delivery of the
package?
The building site should be able to be accessed by a
52’ covered trailer, though it is possible to ferry the package material to
a site if necessary. It will expedite things by having the site cleared, the
foundation in place, and the sub floor ready.
After the package is up, what additional work is needed to make the
house fully livable?
Once the house package has been erected, shingle the
roof and enclose the roof and eves. Then, depending on how finished a look
you are after, work on the decks, interior framing, insulation, plumbing, electricity, dry
wall, trim, cabinets, staining, painting, floor coverings, and install the
appliances.
How many
years have the cabin packages been available?
Cabin packages have been available for more than
25
years and hundreds have been built over that time period.
Is
there a lot of flexibility in the layout and floor plan?
While we have several different standard layouts to
choose from, one of the big advantages of post & beam construction is an
open floor plan which allows great flexibility in the interior design. In
addition, many different options and upgrades can be ordered.
Is it possible
to purchase a log home package?
We offer both exterior and interior log siding that
gives the beauty of logs without any of the disadvantages, such as log
twisting and cracking. Post & beam homes also offer more energy efficiency
than a typical log home.
Do you come to my site and erect the package?
No, You will hire a builder/contractor and he will
install the foundation, erect the package, and then finish it out to your
specs. We provide a very detailed set blueprints well before the home
arrives. The builder will call with questions prior to and during
construction.
What will it cost to construct my home completely
including the package?
To many variables to answer accurately. The two biggest
are local labor rates and the level of finishes you will select. Including
our package, we have seen total costs from $75 to $250 a foot.
What kind of crew will I need to erect the home?
Typically we see 2 carpenters and 4 semi-skilled
assistants.
